Role of Governors
Governing Body
What is the purpose of the Governing Body?
The Governing Body has a general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards.  It acts in a strategic manner to help direct school development.  It is a corporate body and as such responsibility (and therefore potential liability) rests with the Governing Body as a whole, not with individual governors.
Role of Governors
There are three principal elements to this:
1.
To take a  strategic role in the running of the school.  Meaning that the governors decide what they want the school to achieve and set the framework for getting there.
2.
To act as a critical friend to the school.  A critical friend offers support, constructive advice, a sounding board for ideas, a second opinion on proposals and help where needed.  But a critical friend may also challenge, ask questions, seek information, improve proposals and so seek to arrive at the best solution.
3.
To ensure accountability of the governing body to the parents and of the headteacher to the governing body The head teacher and professional staff are accountable to the Governing Body for the school's performance.  The Governing Body must be prepared to explain its decisions and actions to anyone who has a legitimate interest.  This may include staff, pupils, parents and the press as well as the Local Authority or the Secretary of State
